Colour can add charm, grab attention, invoke emotion or represent a brand.

Top tips

  • Colour must not be used as the only way of conveying information.
  • Large text must have a contrast ratio of at least 3
  • Regular text must have a contrast ratio of at least 4.5

Colour blindness can make it hard for people to see certain colours.

It's common for our contrast sensitivity to reduce as we age.

Good contrast makes it easier to use screens in bright conditions.

Understanding Colour Contrast

Colour contrast is the difference in the brightness of two colours. Contrast ratios are represented as numbers from 1 to 21.

You should aim for a ratio that is as high as possible. Remember: there is a minimum requirement.

Requirements

  • Large text (at least 18pt or 14pt bold) - must have a contrast ratio of 3:1 or greater.
  • Regular text (less than 18pt or 14pt bold) - must have a contrast ratio of 4.5:1 or greater.
